I used to shun the outdoors. Today I am longer afraid of enjoying the outdoors as long as I have adequate sun protection. To me the Everyday Hat which is perfectly wide brimmed, and a breathable UPF50+ zip top from Solbari lets me enjoy the outdoors without fear of getting sun damage.

Having been told when I was younger that I have skin that would easily develop skin cancer, I’m extremely cautious. I have a handy app which tells me the UV levels for the day and suggests the protection required. I find myself checking this throughout the day.

I’ve gotten much more proactive about sun safety in the last few years, since my daughter started nagging - I mean educating - me about it. I always wear my hat and sunnies when I’m out and about and I’ve started wearing sunscreen too and even using a sun umbrella on very sunny days. Not to mention my Solbari driving gloves to protect my hands while I chauffeur everyone around!

If most women retouch their make up every time, for me its retouching sunscreen and making sure that my body is protected against the sun. With Solbari clothing I have more time going outdoors because I don't have to put sunscreen on my body and worry about stains.

I've always loved the sun! I love the way it feels and the warmth it gives. Growing up blonde haired and with green eyes, I've always been at risk for this but back then who knew? Now I am the 'hat lady' around here who never goes out without one.

Thankfully I grew up knowing the importance of sun protection and have always worn sunscreen. My mum has sun damage from routine sun exposure throughout her life so I learned that lesson early and always made sure to protect my skin.

Your Story Series: Meet Annie

I spend a lot of time outside and have always loved the sun. I used to say that summer was like the sun was kissing me! Then chemotherapy took my long hair and also made me VERY sun sensitive. The sun was not kissing now, more like biting! Thankfully, it is 3 years on, chemo is over and everything looks good there - except I am still very sun sensitive.

I have been receiving treatment for sun-related skin damage for many years. From time to time my GP has removed basal cell carcinomas from various parts of my body. Even though I still play a lot of sport and spend time in the garden, I am very conscious of covering up to a far greater degree.

Your Story Series: Meet Fiona

I was diagnosed with Lupus 2 years ago while pregnant and also had my first skin cancer cut out. I had increasingly bad joint pain and was getting sunburnt within 5min of being in the sun even with sunscreen on!  I am really strict with sun exposure now. I hate wearing sunscreen so I wear full length UV protective clothes, big hat and sunscreen on all exposed areas if I have to be out in the sun. Otherwise I stay indoors through UV higher than 3.

Your Story Series: Meet Linda

In July 2015 I was sent to a dermatologist because I had developed a black mark on my lip. This turned out to be benign, but the dermatologist asked if I would mind being fully examined. Thank goodness I said yes! He identified a suspicious mole above my left knee. It turned out to be an in-situ melanoma.

Your Story Series: Meet Nigel

I travel the world a lot with my job and I saw something on my shoulder. I really didn't think anything of it and so left it for a month. Only to find it still there. I went to the doctors again not thinking anything other than a mosquito bite or some tropical bite. Luckily I caught it just in time. The one thing I will say is go with your gut feeling.

Your Story Series: Meet Natalia

In my 20s I can remember laying in the sun, hour after hour, waiting for my timer to go off to alert me to flip over, like a piece of bacon roasting under a heat lamp in a diner. My mother, a survivor of melanoma and basal cell carcinoma, impressed upon me the importance of changing my attitude toward the sun and protecting myself.

I am 60+ and really enjoy outdoors and gardening. I have a fairly rare inherited skin condition called DSAP (Disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis) that started in my 30's. I use 50+ sunscreen most days and try to avoid the sun in the hottest part of the day, as well as wearing UV clothing if I'm spending time outside.
