I learned about my skin melanoma 3 years ago. It was just a small mark on my leg. I ignored it completely and paid no attention to it. I would jog every day during my lunch break a couple of kms to a nearby gym. I couldn't be bothered to wear any sun protection or sun screen for such a short jog.

I arrived in Australia aged 13 after living in Europe for 10 years. When I arrived in Australia I didn't know anything about sun protection. I rarely wore a hat as a teenager and didn't understand the importance of sunscreen and other protective measures I should be taking whilst living in Sydney.

Your Story Series: Meet Heather
I became ill at the age of 30, in the 1970’s with fatigue, joint pain, fever, and a painful raised rash on my legs. After a year plus of blood work, x-rays, and finally a biopsy of the leg rash it was confirmed that I had systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE). Following the diagnosis of SLE, I started looking for other options for sun protection in Canada, and there were not many options in the 70’s and 80’s.

I love cycling to work and on weekends. Just because I'm doing outdoor activity, doesn't mean I can't protect my skin from sun damage. Sun protection is very important to me as I care about my skin, in particular when we age we definitely see the damage we have done.

My 67 year old mother has had endless skin cancers taken off her with the worst one being a basal cell carcinoma which was on her chest. The little lump was only a millimetre in diameter but it had spread across her entire chest underneath the surface. She thankfully is fine but was told by her surgeon to never get her skin exposed to the sun again.

Aged 67, I would describe myself as an active older person. My husband and I live on our yacht, currently based near Newcastle, NSW. Our biggest outdoor activity is long distance bicycle touring. Over the past nine years we have ridden thousands of kilometres in over twenty countries. On our rides, I am out in the sun all day.

I'm a 2-year-old happy baby who loves to play outdoors. I was born overseas; and more than a year ago I travelled 12,000 km to come to Australia and live in this beautiful country. In Uruguay, there is no culture in relation to sun protection. Normally we protect ourselves from the cold or the wind, but not from the sun.

Your Story Series: Meet Helena
I was diagnosed with SCLE Lupus two years ago after having had a skin rash that covered my chest for about six months at a time over the previous four years. Lupus is an autoimmune disorder which is mainly triggered by exposure to sunlight. This means I am extremely sun sensitive - even the winter sun is very dangerous for me.

I've had many Basal Cell Carcinomas and five melanomas. The first melanoma was forty years ago, in my mid-thirties. These days, avoiding full sun is my outdoor priority. Last year I had radiation following surgery and chemotherapy for breast cancer, and the radiation makes skin even more sensitive. Long sleeves with SPF 50+ protective fabric are a must, especially in the garden.
