After a year plus of blood work, x-rays, and finally a biopsy of the leg rash it was confirmed that I had systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE). The little lump was only a millimetre in diameter but it had spread across her entire chest underneath the surface. She thankfully is fine but was told by her surgeon to never get her skin exposed to the sun again.

I was diagnosed with SCLE Lupus two years ago after having had a skin rash that covered my chest for about six months at a time over the previous four years. Lupus is an autoimmune disorder which is mainly triggered by exposure to sunlight. This means I am extremely sun sensitive - even the winter sun is very dangerous for me.

I've had many Basal Cell Carcinomas and five melanomas. The first melanoma was forty years ago, in my mid-thirties. These days, avoiding full sun is my outdoor priority. Last year I had radiation following surgery and chemotherapy for breast cancer, and the radiation makes skin even more sensitive. Long sleeves with SPF 50+ protective fabric are a must, especially in the garden.
